How titled players lie to you

If you are lazy like me, the best book for you is the one that you try to avoid the most.

Chess960 is your answer. There's no opening theory so you can burn all those books on openings. It teaches how to play real chess just on general principles.

Hard work is absolutely necessary in chess and I love how you point out that it will be painful. In athletics we correct mechanics and a common response is that it feels weird or off. Training will feel hard and painful but it's a necessity.

Sure, it is not fun but when you have the right mindset it should feel at least satisfying. It happens in every subject: piano playing, athletics, chess, language learning, carpentry... Sometimes you have to work in a challenging, methodical way to really improve.

IMHO the problem is that the feeling of satisfaction only comes after the hard work starts to provide palpable results. Not necessarily in the form of score or rating, it can also be better feeling about your play, being able to see patterns you would have mised before, etc. Unfortunately it takes some time and many people lack the patience and perseverance needed to get to that stage. That's why the promises of magic shortcuts and cheap tricks (cheap in the sense of work, not money) are so appealing.

In the same vein as the author, I would like to add that several titled players that post here and/or have live streams treat chess advertise chess as a type of warfare in order to entice gullible players to here whatever pitch they are saying. Buzz words and phrases like "CRUSH your opponent with <insert any opening or defense>", "DESTROY them with...", "DEMOLISH the enemy with...".

Chess is an intellectual game, not a sport or type of first person shooter game. In the case of many of these absurd live streamers, they spew all that crap just to get you to visit their site so they can reap more advertising revenue. And the tactic or approach they offer is often just some basic principle.
