Berserk ! It's a question of honor

@ Toscani
Thanks for your reply Toscani. Just two more points about that. first i have never seen any player winning a tournament without berserk, because you need the double points always to make a good score. Second, also in the old times it was not a duty to to accept a duel and take the gauntlet if someone has thrown it at you. But the honorable men did do the chicken did not. So it's anyones choice to be a chicken or a man :) I guess Toscanini would have always taken the gauntlet of the floor and agree to a duel between men. But the good news here for all chicken.... :) In chessgames you can die !

How about players who want to think a bit about their moves? Is it so bad? Why are you even playing time controls other than ultra?

Other than that berserk may entirely change the flow of the game. Maybe I am comfortable with 1+0 but not with 30 sec, why should I accept a forced berserk if I know the person is 3x as fast as me with their mouse? (and is foolish enough to think they can win with 30 sec vs 1 min).

berserk is more insulting than doing the opening h4 or a4 or king walk berserk is like saying to your opponent i consider you to be so weak / useless in chess i can beat you with half the time berserk is like kicking someone in the head who is on the ground or who is passed out it is like going to a store and the person in front of you asks how much is this sandwich and the storeowner says $3.00 then when you come up to the counter and you ask the same question he looks at you and say $45.60. THen again berserking is fun for trolling someone hardcore like i beat you with less than half time

To bring it to the last step. Berserk is only possible in tournaments right? So if one joins a tournament you should play for the win no matter how bad you are but tournaments make only sense if you want to have a higher ranking at the tournament table otherwise you could play single games. It's not honorable to join a tournament and be there just lurking to steal away some Elo points from the berserking players who play for the win. In my view thats real poor.

Tournaments are single games. Where is it written a player must stay in a tournament to complete all the rounds. It's not a round robin tournament. It's not a Swiss tournament. It is an arena tournament designed for a competitive one-on-one chess match. Standings is the only thing that is important in an arena tournament. The number of games won is the only aim.
A rating will let a player join a category of players to enjoy an evenly matched game.

A rating is earned. Expect a fluctuation in a rating. The best way to look at it is by only looking at the peak rating. It shows the potential of the players if the conditions are right, they might play at that level.

Players cannot blame others for a self inflicted Berserk time cut.

Players can join a Blitz tournament match and play only one match. It okay. Honorable behavior within an arena tournament is finishing your match. It has nothing to do with finishing the tournament.

Is there such a things as a tournament honor code?

Chess ratings are not at stake.

Honor is satisfied by the completion of one chess match. The players had lots of swings at the pieces to prove their point.

Be happy when you win a match honorably. That' winning credibility, without using assistance to increase a standing.

Don't shame others with a Berserk. Play a match with honor. Play a tournament with pride. Berserk if you feel the need to self inflect a time cut to increase your personal standing.

Self inflicted time pressures only increases stress.
Play to release stress.
Stay zen and humble.
Use your time wisely.
Honor is about respect and harmony.
The honor code applies to acts of cheating.
Pressing the berserk is not cheating and does not violate the honor of the players, even if only one presses the button and not the opponent. Enjoy you games.

A chess player's pledge of honor is to not use assistance.

I did never claim that it is a tournament rule to go berserk or against the tournament etikett not to go berserk. I just said that in my view it's kind of poor to join a tournament just to steel a few points by maybe winning on time against those players who play for the tournament ranking. Of course it's free to join an go whenever you like but at the end of the day it's called tournament and what is a tournament defined about ? About to play for the win. Thats just my opinion...but anyone is free to go on like a chicken :)

@MartialCultivatorMC I'm far from trolling just try to discuss a serious topic. Feel free to leave your opinion here too. I'm looking forward to hear some interesting new arguments about this.

@webbchess

If it is wise to do something, then it's not being a coward.
