"Caruana missed mate in 48"
- Caruana had a forced transition to KBN vs. K. Checkmating KBN vs. K is elementary.
My bad

"That's a bit harsh... mate in FORTY-EIGHT?"
"That's a bit harsh... mate in FORTY-EIGHT?"
* He did not have to calculate 48 moves.
He only had to find 68...Bh4 which converts to a win in 16 moves.
It is not obvious, but this was a World Championship Match.
If Caruana had found 68...Bh4, then he would have been World Champion in 2018.

While we are at it, Karjakin could have drawn with 21...Nxf2+ 22 Kg2 Qf7 23 Kg1 Qf6 24 Kg2 and thus dethroned Carlsen in 2016.

Some of you folks believe Magnus Carlsen is the best of all time...
Do you understand that "best of all time" means that no one was or will EVER be better? Saying he is the best so far is more reasonable, but is still debatable. All it takes is for one person to be a better player than Carlsen and your GOAT statement will be false.

Greatest Of All Time of course means Greatest Of All Time until now.
Until 1927 Capablanca
Until 1972 Fischer
Until 2000 Kasparov
We do not know what will happen.
Maybe Gukesh stays World Champion for 30 years.
Maybe Sindarov becomes World Champion ans stays World Champion for 30 years.
Maybe somebody else becomes the GOAT.

Kasparov was not the greatest — he was the last true champion. A true world champion should be able to beat the engines, or at least try to. To answer the question: it is quite probable that Magnus would beat Capablanca, Fischer, and Kasparov.

but that people on lichess are beating magnus carelsen's rating since somebody got 3600 elo rating like one month ago but then went down by a lot of elo rating. now the highest is 3400.

Then they've gotta change it from GOAT to GOATUN. Doesn't quite have the same ring to it. :)

This depends on either:
Capablanca Fischer and Kasparov at their best being introduced to engines,
or Magnus forgetting all he ever learned from engines.
Indeed most of these 'who was the best' questions require science-fiction.
E.g. Morphy gets to know about 20th century chess, or Tal (for example) goes to visit Morphy after having 20th century chess removed from his brain.
