Does Chess make you happy?

I don’t enjoy playing. It makes me feel old. But I’m doing it to stave off senility. Kakuro is enjoyable, but isn’t cutting it. Lichess is rating me 500 points higher than I’m actually playing. So thumbs up on that aspect.

When I loose - No
When I win -Yes

No it doesn't, I hate chess

I wouldn’t say it makes me happy, but it brings me a measure of enjoyment and is a healthy diversion from the stress and struggle of life.

I think "chasing the rating" means misunderstanding what the rating is for. It shouldn't be the goal to get a high rating (yes, I know, "but that is how you become world champion", but firstly, no it's not, and secondly, let's be honest, none of us are going to become world champion). The goal is (in my opinion) one of two things:

  1. To constantly become better at chess, if you're the achiever kind of person
  2. To play entertaining, exciting, fun games of chess
    (or both (probably both))

For both of these, the rating is nothing but a tool to match you up with opponents where it is more likely to achieve them. You shouldn't chase the rating, you should chase 1. or 2., or both.

Well, you agree, why not go play chess after a hard working day. Good unloading for the brain

It is great entertainment, way better than television, but if you start to obsess about your own ability, then I think it can cease to be fun.

Like golf, if you enjoy the round and don't care too much about your score, you're more likely to have fun. (I quit because I was crap, and looking in the bushes for lost balls on every other hole was not fun).
