Variants do not destroy your standard chess, but if you put too much time on a variant improvement, you might have as well put that time on improvement in standard.

Each teach you a different skill:
Atomic teaches you to defend well and take advantage of blunders when you see them.
Anti helps improve trade calculation and helps you to see hanging pieces or good trades.
960 helps you to learn tactics and to lean on them over memorization.
Three check promotes king safety.
KOTH helps with learning center control.
Horde promotes strong pawn structures and how to attack them.
Racing kings helps with learning king safety during movement.
And crazyhouse... well I have no idea about that one. Dont blunder pieces?

@JASKIRATSINGH An interesting topic. Many of the top chess players in the world are participating in several Chess960 tournaments (now called Freestyle Chess) and I have not noticed any perceptible decline in their chess skills.

I don't necessarily use the variants to evolve, but I use some ideas from certain variants for the standard.
example: in atomic, to avoid very boring theories, sometimes I try to play openings that are not so good, but can give me an advantage due to my preparation.
in standart this can also happen (pragg vs vidit candidates tortement) pragg played a side preparation against Rui Lopez and got an advantage

No and yes Playing 960 help you see tactics and strategy without memorisation so you be better when it comes to the middle game. All the other variants are trash and destroy regular chess games.
