i have a few chess questions

Hi everyone can i ask a. few questions

  1. is bullet/blitz mainly strategy, positional understanding, tactical motifs, intuition, or pure speed and bluffing (e.g. playing tactics that don’t work and relying on the fact that your opponent doesn’t have time to calculate it fully
  2. how do i develop chess strategy and positional understanding? are pawn structures enough? i always find myself making aimless moves without a plan (especially when my pieces are already decently placed because that’s the one advice i’ve heard) and i keep blundering into easy tactics for my opponent
  3. how do i get better at spotting tactics without knowing there is one? do i need to treat every position as a puzzle? how do i develop this intuition over time? i do my puzzles and stuff but it just doesn’t seem obvious unless i’m actively looking for a tactic
  4. how important are fast puzzles like puzzle rush and racer and storm? do they tell you anything about a player’s ability, and if i keep spamming it will i definitely improve?
  5. how large is the skill diff between a 2k bullet vs a 2k rapid? is a player’s rapid skill usually higher or lower

thx for ur time and i look forward to hearing from u all

"is bullet/blitz mainly strategy, positional understanding, tactical motifs, intuition, or pure speed and bluffing (e.g. playing tactics that don’t work and relying on the fact that your opponent doesn’t have time to calculate it fully"

  • Mainly tactics and blunder prevention.

"how do i develop chess strategy and positional understanding?"

  • By studying endgames.

"are pawn structures enough?"

  • Not relevant to blitz/bullet

"i always find myself making aimless moves"

  • That is bad.

"when my pieces are already decently placed"

  • Improve your worst standing piece.

"keep blundering"

  • Blunder check before you move.

"how do i get better at spotting tactics without knowing there is one?"

  • By analyzing your lost games.

"do i need to treat every position as a puzzle?"

  • Yes.

"how do i develop this intuition over time?"

  • By analyzing your lost games.

"i do my puzzles"

  • Puzzles are overrated.

"how important are fast puzzles like puzzle rush"

  • Puzzle rush is interesting to see how much increment you need.

"how large is the skill diff between a 2k bullet vs a 2k rapid?"

  • different skills.

"is a player’s rapid skill usually higher or lower"

  • Higher.

thank you for your message. i appreciate the responses you have given and wld like to clarify a bit:

is strategy solely based off improving the worst piece? will tactics just appear because of that or do i need to actively pursue smth? or is it purely a waiting game
is playing games the most important? how many games does it usually take to reach 2k from somewhere like 1.1k rapid chess com?
thanks again

  1. I think that bullet is mainly about understanding quickly the position, decisions making and the recognition of tacticals pattern. Regarding strategy, none in bullet. The challeng in bullet is more to being able to take a decision very quickly, for each move. The decision can be a dirty move that is a blunder, in theory, but in the context of bullet, it can lead the opponent to overthink or blunder the move right after. A bit of psychology, in a way.

"is strategy solely based off improving the worst piece?"

  • No, improving the worst piece is a heuristic for move selection. Strategy is mostly based on endgame knowledge.

"will tactics just appear"

  • Sometimes a tactical opportunity just appears because of a downside of your opponent's move.

"do i need to actively pursue smth?"

  • 'Tactics flow from a superior position' - Fischer

"a waiting game"

  • 'If you play 40 good moves, then you win, unless your opponent plays 40 good moves too, then it is a draw.' - Smyslov

"is playing games the most important?"

  • Analyzing lost games is more important.

"how many games does it usually take to reach 2k"

  • It takes 200 hours to reach 2000 if you do the right things and do not do the wrong things. Blitz and bullet belong to the wrong.

few questions

The most important thing is to start playing ranked games. We need to look at your games, at your rating. Play 10+5.

"Play 10+5"

  • Better 15+10.
"Play 10+5" * Better 15+10.

I offer very little. Learn to think two moves ahead. Puzzles can help with this.
