I guess cheating is easy, and catching them is hard on a free server like Lichess.
A good server, but for money, is ICC.
(Yes, I'm a salesperson sent from ICC; you guessed right, teenagers.)
I tried to play on ICC a few years ago to hide my games from the OTB opponents, but there were very few players there. Sometimes I even lost rating after winning a game, which is hard to understand. Maybe there's some section which works better, I don't know. I failed to find clear instructions how to verify an account, so I paid a bit of money to buy a 6-month or 12-month membership, staying anonymous. (With my credit card linked to my name, ofc.)
I know that ICC was the leading chess server 20 years ago, but now Chess.com and Lichess are the biggest two. (ChessCOM being the biggest of course, but I'm happily playing on both, both have their advantages.)

in that u cheated too??
My summary of the article is it sounds like a cheater was detected by lichess algorithm and then paired up against other cheaters. The fact they got so many cheaters means it worked well since it means cheats can play with each other while honest players can play with honest players. Since the OP admits to buying a "ROM" it means they're also funding the cheating industry.
If the OP really cared about stopping cheating they'd give all the information regarding the cheating technology to anti-cheat teams who would ensure that exploit is patched and detected faster.
The "experiment" excuse is just a way they can justify their wrongdoing. I'm sure people who have cheated for years will also claim it was an "experiment". A proper experiment has a hypothesis where you test a theory and compare it to the experimental data. Nothing in OPs post meets that criteria and it doesn't seem reproducible, has no control or baseline tests with it just being filled with anecdotes at best. Fact they deleted account means all the raw data for the "experiment" was deleted.
To answer the question OP asked the answer is simply that he who cheats gets cheated on!

I did an experiment and cheated myself. I bought a ROM that allows me to autoplay at whatever rating I choose. I set it to 2200 and played some bullet games. I'm rated around 1900 so I played people around that level. The 2200 rating bot went 3-4-8. 4 of the draws accepted a draw after 5 moves each. 3 of the 4 losses, there were at least 36 moves made in 3 seconds of game time. He had :59 seconds ...
Or maybe the bot you were using just sucked.

Good to know, thank you for responding.
- Yes, it was 20 years ago.
- What I meant is, I think cheating is easy, and catching them is hard. So on a free website, there would be lots of cheaters, but also on a non-free one, since cheaters have gotten smarter.
So the best is not to play vs. anonymous people, but to play with people you know and trust. (Or play 3+0, which isn't chess, but it makes cheating much harder.)

" So many people are cheating nowadays. What happened? "
When Lichess was younger, people still played long games here, even 15+15; now you can barely find anyone who plays 10+5.
I assume when bad people come, good people leave, so we're stuck with a pool of crooks.
Also, I sometimes know a person cheated but am too lazy to report it, so add laziness.
In summation:
- Failure of good people to act.
- Cheater got smarter.
- Catching them is an employment - a job. One needs to pay (and even if so, maybe cheating is still easier than catching).
- When bad people come, good people leave.

its just too much pressure on mods ( 1mod handling 10s of cases at once) + lichess's cheat detecting system being outdated . it won't cost much. i developed a system myself 7 months ago, its working #proves 1.2% of lichess players do cheat in 1/10 games .it can be prevented. but idk whats wrong with developers, neither they wanna update nor let anyone to be a dev. who can make genuine changes. thus in short :- just be happy with everything you got here, nobody can do a thing about it unless lichess really wanna change. thinking about it is a time waste

problem was never with multi accounting , but sadly lichess cares about multi accounting (chance factor ban , people with 30s of alts do exist) more than cheating , cheaters get 10s of chances...but guess what?. i once received perma ban cuz of multi accounting ( lichess bots, not cuz of cheating... example :- @darkonbot {its not mine, darkoncrack is the owner of that amazing bot }) .here we are. I honestly think lichess needs a lot of change . Problem won't get solved itself , you must step ahead!

Cheaters are untouchable, there isn't any effective solution to detect them.
