The best opening for white and the worst opening for white

I think is a4

g4 is the worst. tpr says it loses by force, I'm not so sure about that, but it's very bad for white.

Are you sure about that? The KID opening goes like that. (KID means King's Indian Defence)

a4 is actually fine. It doesn't really make you worse. You are basically playing with black pieces then. It can actually be a useful move in a lot of the openings. 1.g4 makes your kingside really weak. After black just plays normal 1.d5 you don't have a good move. Cuz you have to waste your time to defend this pawn.

ok, TY for the info

f3 weakens the king, g4 gives a bad position and a4 wastes a move and allows the other person activity. Alternatively, e4, d4, c4, and Nf3 are all good moves. Although some moves like f4 or Nc3 aren't super bad and are used for surprise factor often, and moves like a4, h4, the bongcloud, and the Magnus Carlsen gambit, as it is sometimes called, are played sometimes by super-GMs and other masters as a joke and to see if they can win anyway using their skill.

Shouldn't be F4?

1 f4 is fine, as 1 d4 f5 is playable.

Chess is probably a draw with best play. Therefore, there are likely no objectively best openings. There are, however, openings that are best and worst for humans and engines. The worst: 1. g4. The best: 1. Nf3, 1. e4, 1. d4, and 1. c4; they are so close that it is hard to quantify.

(@)bibaleze123: 'a4 is actually fine.' ~ 'Fine' is not good enough; to win, you must use a warrior mentality: make every move count.

'It doesn't really make you worse.' ~ if something does not help you, then it hurts you. While you are making a do-nothing move, your opponent will be making a useful move.

'You are basically playing with black pieces then.' ~ You wasted your advantage as White.

'It can actually be a useful move in a lot of the openings.' ~ 1. g4 can also be useful in many openings. You could play a4 later; there is no need to play it because, 'It could be useful later' when there are moves that will more likely be useful later.

"1. g4 can also be useful in many openings. You could play a4 later; there is no need to play it because"

  • The difference is that 1 g4 weakens the king's side and 1 a4 does not.

"You wasted your advantage as White"

  • The white advantage is a myth. Chess is a draw.
