My point (and it's not on the top of my head) is that we are not mere machines.
We are mostly empty space, although we look solid. We are a timeless aggregate of weird energy and ...
we love who we love.
Chemicals? Bah.
B.F. Skinner can take us only so far. There's more to us than cause and effect.

There are different words for different kinds of love. Sometimes I think it is not a great idea to lump all forms of it under one word. In other cultures, people don't necessarily say, "I love you" the same way for all people about whom they care. To say it in English, which is imperfect in this regard, there is romantic love, familial love (and there are probably different types of this as well), love of a good friend, etc...some people even say "I love it" when someone comes up with a clever idea...or I love this (if something tastes good, etc.)...I am sure I have missed something, so please tell me about different types of love I left out...
Love, to me, means willingness to protect one's "loved ones" at personal expense, even at the cost of one's own life. You can feel love, but to truly love someone, you must walk the walk...

Don't forget the love of bacon. That's a special kind of love which, I hasten to say, is neither erotic nor familial.
Furthermore, bacon love appears not to be confined to any one species. And yet, at present only one species -- homo sapiens -- is known to have the capability to both bring home bacon and fry it up in a pan.
In that sense, I suppose, humans are the keepers and guardians of bacon. And we must, when possessed of bacon, be ever vigilant in its care and proper use.
I say this because the spaniel has designs on bacon that he doesn't even try to hide. If I were to turn my back for a second, bacon would disappear and I'd never even get an apology from the spaniel. And bacon is not inexpensive in my neck of the woods.
Even though I'm not really sure this is the neck. It could be more like the shoulder or upper torso of the woods.

That's certainly a part of it; nobody likes to see love leaving.
