Well, since no state houses over 12% of Americans, and a state law is an action performed by a state population...
Imagine a state implementing what, for you, is the best political system. In addition, their economy is flourishing, their culture is amazing, and what not, really, anything you like.
BUT there is a catch. For some obscure reason in this country, if you are a member of the nazi party, then you are allowed to torture, rape and kill Jews,and no one should do anything to prevent you from doing it. For the sake of the argument we'll assume that 6% of the population of this country are nazis and 6% are Jewish.

Would you not judge this country on the actions of a minority? Would you not say that despite all the advantages you can imagine, this country is backwards (and significantly worse than most of the current countries)?

I already hear your counter-argument "but it's not the actions of a minority, it's actually the silent majority because they should change the law but they don't". Well, PRECISELY. The same apply to the US. If a state is allowed to have backwards laws, it means that the silent majority is not willing to change things at the federal level.

PS: I am by no mean comparing the points I criticize about the US to killing, torturing and raping Jews. Just explaining why we do, in fact, judge a country by its worst aspects and not by its best achievements.

Ngl, I think sometimes Fc-in-the-uk only tried to single out the bad parts. But the points about ad hominem attacks and insults... are a little hypocritical, on your part, to say the least. Also the parts about comparing the United States to the Soviet Union or Iran or North Korea was not what FC-in-the-UK meant. They were probably comparing to other developed western countries: "The only western country" post 1. This is most certainly the case for the majority of voters. Do you just not vote for a candidate who you don't 100% agree with? I've voted third party, and I've not voted out of not liking any candidates. Ultimately all Americans fall in the trap of voting so their least favorite person WONT win, not because they agree with who were voting for.

Math has come a long way since the 1700s. We desperately need a change to how we vote in the US to allow more political parties. Both have a death grip on America that they're not going to relinquish without a change in first past the post voting.

If there was one issue, and the possible positions we're "for" and "against", maybe your statement would be feasible.
