Ask yourself: How popular is its consumption today? And how common has it been historically? (Or even prehistorically, given the archæological record?) . . . It would appear that, on the contrary, most people enjoy it, and always have. Making your position the rare one. (Selah.) But perhaps it’s an acquired taste, and one learns to like it after a little experience with it. ̄_(ツ)_/ ̄

I know that, in some times and places, its consumption was actually mandatory, for health reasons (believe it or not). For example, the British Navy put a little in their drinking water to kill microbes, and rationed it along with lime juice for all sailors. (Cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grog.)

But I could never imagine sipping on rubbing alcohol for instance

Despite the name, rubbing alcohol isn’t the same thing at all. ^_^ As with “alcoholism” — which, as I explained before, is really just a name for addictive behavior — rubbing “alcohol” is something of a misnomer. Don’t let the recycling of this word confuse you. (BTW, they actually make it smell bad on purpose, to discourage people from drinking it.) ;-)

Your question has riled me a little. I was born in the seventies grew up in the eighties it was a totally different age , I'm an alcoholic because I have an addictive personality which means I like more and more of a good thing . The fashion of this woke generation is we drink water , go to the gym, and don't dare stand out from crowd you're all brainwashed into being exactly the same with zero character (which isn't surprising as big brother watching and listening to everything you do and say , but **** em ' do what you want anyway). Fashions change , through the decades when it's fashionable again to be an anarchist come back to me , but don't be saying why are people alcoholics like it's a terrible thing when you were born after the year 2000 , there are many reasons why people drink I drink because I love it , I don't know why your post got my back up it just did ,a little
