it's a company registered in france I believe, don't know what sort of company or who exactly are the owner(s).

It's a non-profit, you can find the link to the act of creation on the donate page:

No, if it were communist it would be the worst chess server, not the best.

Right, just like Cuban cigars!

we’d all be eating porridge while they ate steak, the site wouldn’t be working for 3 days a week for us but always be available to them, the lights would go out when it gets dark and dissenters would be taken from their beds at night and never heard from again. Playing on .com would be banned and there’d be a reward for grassing up anyone that did so they could be shot at dawn.

Such things have happened, but they are not the preserve of any particular ideology. The crimes of Stalin, Mao and the Kim dynasty are widely publicised; the details of the dirty wars in Latin America and what is now known as The Asia-Pacific less so (to say nothing of the age of empire, the scramble for Africa and so forth).

Ah yes, the argument that "true" communism hasn't ever been practiced. Communism is never anything but evil. The problem is most people tend to misinterpret and twist history to push horrible agendas. Brainwashing and propaganda didn't begin with Hitler and Stalin and they won't end with them either.

Ah yes, the straw man. Swiftly followed with a grab-bag of non sequiturs.

Ah yes, debate club! Guys who seem to feel only Latin suits em and who manage to cough back up most everything they digested in some Critical Thinking seminar.

And incidentally, I say lichess is more a Utopian website.

If you cough up most everything you digest then you ought to seek medical attention. Unless of course doctors use too much Latin for you.

Comrades, let's keep this chess related, since this is General Chess after all.
Or kindly move this discussion to https://lichess.org/forum/off-topic-discussion

It could be run by Communists... but then we’d all be eating porridge while they ate steak, the site wouldn’t be working for 3 days a week for us but always be available to them, the lights would go out when it gets dark and dissenters would be taken from their beds at night and never heard from again. As a matter of facts, Lichess IS run by communists. And I haven't noticed power cuts, ban on chess.com, or rewards for grassing...
