Wow, there seems to be quite a bit of discussion in deciding what time control to use. Also thanks to fischy for getting the tourney started!
For me, zh has always been a practical game, and much of the fun comes from finding ways to play creatively, not necessarily from playing the most accurate moves.
Time pressure has always natural part of the game with 1 0 being the most popular time control for a long time. I don't recommend anything more than 3+2 or 3+0. Save the much longer time controls for normal chess/OTB/computer chess.
I think JannLee's suggestion of multiple time controls is a good one - slow (3+2), fast (1 0). It will provide a good balance. 30sec however is too fast, and relies mostly on luck :D :D .
I don't like the idea of 2+1 or 2 0 because it feels a bit neither here nor there - or maybe it's just because I'm really bad with time management.
If there must be a super long time control, perhaps save it for the final match up if there is one?
Cheers
