How to

Hello,
I am trying to set up a study chapter for my openings with the help of the Lichess Tools extension, but I cannot get the desired behavior for my variations.

Here is my problem: after the moves 1... e6 2. b3 d5 3. Bb2, I have two options for Black:

The main line starting with 3... dxe4

A variation starting with 3... Nf6

How should this line be modified so that the second variation does not restart from move 1 but with 3..Nf6?
1... e6 2. b3 d5 3. Bb2 dxe4 (3... Nf6 4. e5 Nfd7 5. d4) 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. Qe2 *

Thanks in advance for your help!

Bonjour,

1... e6 2. b3 d5 3. Bb2 dxe4 (3... Nf6 4. e5 Nfd7 5. d4) 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. Qe2 *

Merci d'avance pour votre aide !

If you want to have the same study chapter starting from the initial position, there is no way to make individual variations start from an arbitrary point.

What you can do, though, is to create a chapter that starts from the position you want to explore.

In LiChess Tools you can:

  • right click the move you want the variation to start with
  • Shift-click the "Copy branch as PGN" option (when pressing Shift it should change to "Copy PGN (fen)"

This will copy the PGN from that move onwards, starting from the existing position. You can then create a new chapter with that PGN.

A more advanced use is using bookmarks:

  • right click the move you want the variation to start with
  • click "Add/remove bookmark" and pick a name for the bookmark
  • right click the move again
  • click "Create chapter from here"

This will automatically create a new chapter from that move. If you want to also delete the moves from the current chapter, Shift-click the "Create chapter from here".

Feel free to contact me on the Lichess chat if you need more help.
