How can we increase the number of slow thinking games?

@petri999 said ^

why should it even change? People like playing bullet even it unlikely to make them better players. Who cares. This is entertainment. Do what makes you happy.

I am not saying what I am thinking that bullet is horrible , I am just asking what we can improve for the other extreme.

More classical games is no goal by itself.
If people want to play fast chess, then there is no point in convincing them to play classical.
More tournaments in it can increase popularity.
Above a certain level it also is hard to get a pairing for classical or even rapid.
So some blitz and bullet is by necessity, for lack of pairing in a slower alternative.

For me, chess has become a fast food choice. If I use increment time I'll probably slow down the pace of my games.
My present chess activity is approximately: 81% fast play vs 19% slow play; That’s about a 4:1 ratio of fast to slow activity.

What I want is to play fast. What I need, if I want to improve, is to slow down.
Increasing my increment time is probably the simplest way for me to kick the habit of playing fast.

Remove the flagging time control, and the chess culture will change.

ADHD is a real problem in chess. I wonder how many go undiagnosed here. We need a local resident Doctor to help diagnosis those who sit for hours playing mouse-chess ultra-bullet for an intervention and prescription qualifications.

This may be more of a societal problem. The human race is suffering from a shrinking attention span. I invest in the stock market, and all everyone cares about (and this includes the institutional investors), is the next quarterly earnings announcement.

I think this is a byproduct of first, the video games of the 80's (instant gratification),

Second, the internet boom in the 90's (no need to do research, just google it on the net).

And now we have AI, which can even do your reading and writing for you.

All of this stuff has destroyed people's attention spans, and I think cell phones are accelerating this problem. People can't even put words together to form sentences anymore.

Someone wrote a book not long ago called ,'The Dumbest Generation' ...It's a problem, and I'm no different from anyone else. I find I'm unable to settle in and read through a book anymore.

I think chess is just reflecting this trend that's going on in society as a whole.

The way I see it anyway.

Attention span? no, I kind of doubt it.. @acercamp

IMO It fell apart from the top of the ladder as computer strength and abuse rose.

Master level and expert level players have to put a lot of energy into long games in order to play how they play. When the integrity of the game is in question, this effort becomes less appealing. When no master or expert players play, there is less incentive for class A to play and so forth on down the ladder.

Faster games require less energy and less personal investment, so running into an engine abuser is less devastating to the player. It is human nature to avoid pain.

My friends don't want to play long controls because they think there are a lot of cheaters there.

Speed chess focuses on modern central openings with sudden death time controls.
To slow down chess, we may need more themed flank openings with increment time controls.
