is it bad etiquete to aim for a stalemate when you're clearly down in material/about to lose?

it's part of the game.

doing it on purpose is all good, accidentally doing it is fine but if you accidentally did it to a friend you could apologize.

when a GM plays a GM in classical, if one GM blunders and gets a losing position, there's a level of trust in their opponent's ability that they will 100% of the time win. so resigning is an acknowledgement of their opponents skill. for low rated players, there's always a chance, and for blitz or faster, there's always a chance. unless you're a GM playing classical, don't resign.

as for adding time, if I'm winning on the board but low on time, I've never been given extra time. If i'm losing, occasionally I get given extra time. It's because they want to checkmate rather than win on time. so I resign.

and I love receiving insults in chat. it makes me happy. If they are funny I don't report, if they are boring insults, I report.

Im not saying its bad etiquette but i feel a little disrespected when people wait to get mated when they have 23 material points. Its like there saying "You're bad so i think you will stalemate". Whats more frustrating is when it happens in daily games, because you have to login on youre account just to play a won game, and even more frustrating is when youre up 23 material points, but cant play because the internet provider is having problems and i time-out. Not even a draw. Just " You lost on time" in my email

If the stalemate trap actually worked, it's proof it was not bad etiquette to go for it, because you correctly saw that you had a realistic chance to get a draw, and you were right.

The only situation where playing for a stalemate is considered bad etiquette is if it is absolutely certain that your opponent has the required skill to avoid the stalemate (also considering the clock situation), and it's a waste of time for both players to play on.

Playing for a stalemate is never bad etiquette in bullet or fast blitz, where anything can happen even to the best players.

But in the original story the game did end in Stalemate!! That is actual proof that playing on was correct, and 100% disqualifies the opponent from being allowed to suggest that one should have resigned...

If there are reasonable chances of a comeback, then you are not losing; you are probably losing.

Bad etiquette? Yes.

Imagine you were playing in person. If you would not act the same way jn person, then it's bad etiquette. Harving said that, bad etiquette is acceptable online.

I actually do the same otb.
