Do we really know what love is??

We say that we love animals by petting dogs/cats but at the same time we consume animals in form of food (Chickens etc..).
Parents say that we love our children but they forced them in certain kind of career?
.....

We say “I love you” so easily that the word is start losing their meaning. So what actually makes those words genuine?

That's a big question; I find that this definition by sci-fi author Robert A. Heinlein might come close to an answer:

“Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.”

Still, the question will always remain...

Love is a horse galloping headlong over a cliff without a thought to the impact
