Many won't want to hear it, but things go downhill when political extremists rise.
Although it could be a classic chicken and egg problem, and perhaps extremists rise as things go downhill. I'll admit that, because certainty about such matters is hard to obtain. And I'm not incapable of error.
But I think my tentative, originally stated cause-and-effect relationship is valid.
I have noticed (it's not hard) that as extreme Leftists (or, less commonly, extreme Rightists) gain control of a society; that society seems to degrade and fall under stress and sadness, eventually, even as some in business strive to produce and create prosperity and advancements. But extremists can eventually drive such positive influences away, and we see that going on today in some states. Please pay attention to which ones.
Extreme leftists want ever more centralized control, and ever more departure from traditional values. They seem to spread gloom and despair and preach that the world is ending and that things can only be fixed if you give THEM more power and tear up traditional society.
The classic liberal impulse is a good thing. It fought, for example, against the stupidity and evil of racism, when racism was a big nasty problem in some parts of the world.
But outright extreme Leftism is not a good thing. It tends to devalue the individual and elevate centralized government, controlled by a relative few who feel that "the ends justify the means." And "the ends" tend to include keeping themselves and their cronies in power and wealth, even as they preach the value of modest expectations to others. NOTICE which states are having huge problems and getting sadder and more in debt. NOTICE which states tend to waste huge amounts of money on things that get nowhere or even get worse. Giggle.
Are those sad states mostly run by moderates or conservatives, or by Leftists?
It's pretty obvious, really, if one takes an overview. But weirdly, some keep voting the same way, over and over, even while complaining about the results. It's as if they've been conditioned to enjoy the resulting dystopia. Or perhaps they've become so indoctrinated that they think that's "just the way things are and always have to be." There IS a discernable fashion among too many to think that life is hopeless and that children shouldn't be birthed into such a horrible, dying world.
But it's not a horrible, dying world. And in many ways life is much LESS hard now than it used to be. Being young has ALWAYS been a struggle for most. That's normal, and with patience and hard work and optimism it can be overcome -- and it HAS been overcome by billions, for generations on end.
No, not by seizing from others and burning things down. But by continuing with courage and optimism to become useful and dependable and kind. 2026 is much less difficult than 1930 or 1941.
Humanity is not monstrous and is not some awful virus. It's all we've got. And most people are pretty decent and kind. Life can be hard at times, but that's typical of any adventure. As we continue, we typically grow and improve if we don't just give up.
