I don't disagree with you strongly, @be-kind-always . But people can have an off-day, or (with time) gain more self-control or wisdom. And, absent genuine defamation, it's not as if we're talking about terribly serious offenses.

If somebody wants to call me a dusty, recalcitrant, antediluvian Pangloss, I can weather the storm. No arms and legs fall off, and, if anything, it helps others to more accurately evaluate the opinions and objectivity of he or she who insults. I have learned not to take the opinions of the frequently outraged too seriously, and I think many (not all) will agree with that.

Indeed, let's hope that's true during the next election. Of course, many will disagree with me and some may even choose to insult me for holding that opinion. Oh, well. They are still members of the wonderful Lichess forum community, one of the finest available online communities on this lovely planet.

And I thank YOU for your objectivity and displayed excellence, as well.

Interesting point, I think I agree. It is annoying though, and has ruined many threads that could have evolved into interesting discussions. I suppose we can fight against it by weathering the storm, anything that is not affecting the personality of their own by becoming moody and pessimistic is okay.

Mods are supposed to do more than just be the insult police (although they frequently fail even in that department—check out any clousems vs LegendaryQueen alt forum rumble). They should provide guidance on the rules and they should prevent spammers, etc from breaking the forum.

If someone makes a thread, and a bunch of kids nuke it with shitposts, that’s not okay. It’s basically a denial of service on the conversation. And these aren’t isolated incidents—any serious, non-politics thread (don’t get me started on those) seems to get nuked immediately. Kids see this, think it’s okay, and it becomes a cycle.

@Noflaps In what world is this forum capably moderated? The off-topic section has always been poorly moderated (even mods and admin admit this), but it seems to have sunken lower this year.

If you have been victimized by insults in the past, noble @clousems, you have my sympathy. You deserve better.

Actually, you have my sympathy regardless, since I am partial to the clever, and I am certain that you are quite clever enough to "hold your own" against rage baiters without the need for assistance.

But I think the mods do okay. If something is reported, I am relatively confident that they will consider it. And they DO seem to take action from time to time when the situation warrants action. Some rather notable "personalities" seem to disappear from the forum from time to time.

Perhaps they don't always take action to suit everyone, but they are doing a thankless task and have to consider much besides the opinions of some. I think they do pretty well.

I could be wrong, of course, as always. But although I am somewhat frequently the recipient of less than flattering remarks, I find contentment here. ESPECIALLY for the price.

Indeed, if Lichess or its interesting forum were to disappear tomorrow, I would genuinely grieve. This seems to be the single best use of the internet that I have ever discovered. And that is taking into account both the technology to email and the technology to message.

At least here I am not constantly besieged by fraudulent emails and messages warning me (falsely) that I have unpaid parking violations that I must take care of NOW or risk being arrested!

Let me point out, I do not think THIS particular post is "spam" even though it deviates in content from the thread title. Why do I think that? Because it replies, germanely (if somewhat insouciantly), to something else posted IN the thread.

I could be wrong, of course. So each should read the terms of service and decide for himself or herself. Or itself or themselves. Whatever the case may be.
